Sam Harris - The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason (Audiobook)

In this sometimes simplistic and misguided book, Harris calls for the end of religious faith in the modern world. Not only does such faith lack a rational base, he argues, but even the urge for religious toleration allows a too-easy acceptance of the motives of religious fundamentalists. Religious faith, according to Harris, requires its adherents to cling irrationally to mythic stories of ideal paradisiacal worlds (heaven and hell) that provide alternatives to their own everyday worlds. Moreover, innumerable acts of violence, he argues, can be attributed to a religious faith that clings uncritically to one set of dogmas or another. Very simply, religion is a form of terrorism for Harris. Predictably, he argues that a rational and scientific view—one that relies on the power of empirical evidence to support knowledge and understanding—should replace religious faith. We no longer need gods to make laws for us when we can sensibly make them for ourselves. Publishers Weekly

Mark Twain's Mysterious Stranger

A brilliantly creative and thought-provoking (frightening too) scene from a stop-motion animation flick, The Adventures of Mark Twain. The Fallen Angel (Satan) gives a lesson to the children about being human and life. The dialogs refer to the famous atheist author Mark Twain's explanation of 'moral sense'. You can read The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain.

As my special childhood favorite, I strongly recommend you to watch the whole movie. It's really worth it!

The Jesus Mysteries: Was the "Original Jesus" a Pagan God? - Timothy Freke & Peter Gandy

The authors postulate that Christianity as we know it, regardless of the teachings of its founder, ultimately distilled and usurped the greatest wisdom inherent in pagan traditions. Specifically, they charge that Christianity looted the traditions of the Osiris/Dionysus cults--borrowing, synthesizing and domesticating what was most sacred to Greco-Roman civilization. Freke and Gandy assert that Christian history is "nothing less than the greatest cover-up of all time. Publishers Weekly

Kinds Of Minds: Toward An Understanding Of Consciousness - Daniel C. Dennett (Audiobook)

Narrated by Daniel C. Dennett

What kinds of minds are there? Do starfish, amoebas or dogs have minds? What makes human minds so different? Brilliant philosopher and bestselling author Daniel C. Dennett goes back to basics to question whether there is one special phenomenon, sentience, that distinguishes some organisms from others. He discovers how different minds acquire their different powers, and examines the explosive importance of language. Dennett is as lively a reader as he is writer and this audio book adds an extra dimension of clarity and understanding to his beautifully written work. Amazon

Tips for Spotting the Religion in Science's Clothing

It is not new using the science to justify their dogmatic ideas by creationists, intelligent designers and followers of pseudo-scientific phenomena etc. This NewScientist article opens a volley of fire against these postulates.

"(...) Misguided interpretations of quantum physics are a classic hallmark of pseudoscience, usually of the New Age variety, but some religious groups are now appealing to aspects of quantum weirdness to account for free will. Beware: this is nonsense.

When you come across the terms "Darwinism" or "Darwinists", take heed. True scientists rarely use these terms, and instead opt for "evolution" and "biologists", respectively. When evolution is described as a "blind, random, undirected process", be warned. While genetic mutations may be random, natural selection is not. (...)" [Read more...]
