Primates and Philosophers: How Morality Evolved - Frans de Waal

Celebrated primatologist de Waal expands on his earlier work in Good Natured: The Origins of Right and Wrong in Humans and Other Animals to argue that human traits of fairness, reciprocity and altruism develop through natural selection. Based on his 2004 Tanner Lectures at Princeton, this book argues that our morality grows out of the social instincts we share with bonobos, chimpanzees and apes. De Waal criticizes what he calls the "veneer theory," which holds that human ethics is simply an overlay masking our "selfish and brutish nature." De Waal draws on his own work with primates to illustrate the evolution of morality. The volume also includes responses to de Waal by Robert Wright, Christine M. Korsgaard, Philip Kitcher and Peter Singer. Although E.O. Wilson and Robert Wright have long contended that altruism is a product of evolution, de Waal demonstrates through his empirical work with primates the evolutionary basis for ethics. Richard Dawkins Interviews Richard Leakey

"The man in Kenya who is driving this particular kind of campaign is Bishop Adoyo. He has got some extraordinary ideas, but very fundamentalist, very conservative. One point in a conservation with him on a telephone interview with one of the media, he put to me that what we are proposing is dangerous, depicting the evolutionary story is dangerous. I was somewhat shocked that it was dangerous. I said to Bishop, these things have been dead before several millions of years, how could they be dangerous? And the response was that it tells a very plausible story and the youth are in danger of believing it. And therefore it is best not told." Richard Leakey

The Science of Evolution and the Myth of Creationism - Ardea Skybreak

"... of tremendous benefit to many, especially those in the teaching profession where there are frequent opportunites to defend science against the ridiculous assertions by religious zealots and fundamentalists."
—Richard Leakey

"[Uses] the errors of help explain and contrast the principles of evolutionary biology. It's fascinating."
—PZ Myers, Pharyngula

In today’s world, without the science of evolution there would be no science. Written for both the scientifically-minded as well as those who are not familiar with science at all, this book details the facts of the science of evolution. In one engrossing volume Ardea Skybreak looks at the diversity and complexity of life on this planet and how all life, including humans, evolved. She examines the many different lines of mutually reinforcing evidence that support and confirm the biological theory of evolution. At the same time, Skybreak dissects the myth of Creationism and the lies behind the thinly-veiled religiosity of Intelligent Design. There’s urgency in this book. It comes at a time when evolution—and the very definition of science—is under concerted attack by religious fundamentalists, with backing from the highest levels of government. The reader will come away with a deepened appreciation of the beauty and wonders of nature, as well as an understanding of the basic scientific facts of evolution and a clear sense of why science and a scientific method make it possible to determine what’s real—and why knowing what’s real profoundly matters. Nightline - Face-Off: Does God Have a Future?

Sam Harris, Michael Shermer, Deepak Chopra and Jean Houston come together in this hot debate. Fun to watch, especially listen to scientific (!) views of Deepak Chopra who objects to Sam Harris because he claims that he has more scientific credentials as an expert.

Videos were taken from ABC website and merged.

Deepak Chopra objects to Sam Harris. Guess why?

Queen - Innuendo

While the sun hangs in the sky and the desert has sand
While the waves crash in the sea and meet the land
While there's a wind and the stars and the rainbow
'Till the mountains crumble into the plain

Oh yes we'll keep on tryin'
Tread that fine line
Oh we'll keep on tryin' yeah
Just passing our time

While we live according to race, colour or creed
While we rule by blind madness and pure greed
Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
Through the eons, and on and on

Oh yes we'll keep on tryin'
We'll tread that fine line
Oh oh we'll keep on tryin'
'Till the end of time
'Till the end of time

Through the sorrow all through our splendour
Don't take offence at my innuendo

You can be anything you want to be
Just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be
Be free with your tempo be free, be free
Surrender your ego be free, be free to yourself

If there's a God or any kind of justice under the sky
If there's a point if there's a reason to live or die
If there's an answer to the questions we feel bound to ask

Show yourself - destroy our fears - release your mask

Oh yes we'll keep on trying
Hey tread that fine line
Yeah we'll keep on smiling yeah
And whatever will be - will be
We'll keep on trying
We'll just keep on trying
'Till the end of time
'Till the end of time
'Till the end of time

Not the Impossible Faith - Richard Carrier

Dr. Richard Carrier is an expert in the history of the ancient world and a critic of Christian attempts to distort history in defense of their faith. Not the Impossible Faith is a tour de force in that genre, dissecting and refuting the oft-repeated claim that Christianity could not have succeeded in the ancient world unless it was true. Though framed as a detailed rebuttal to Christian apologist J.P. Holding (author of The Impossible Faith), Carrier takes a general approach that educates the reader on the history and sociology of the ancient world, answering many questions like: How did Christians approach evidence? Was there a widespread prejudice against the testimony of women? Was resurrection such a radical idea? Who would worship a crucified criminal? And much more. Written with occasional humor and an easy style, and thoroughly referenced, with many entertaining "gotcha!" moments, Not the Impossible Faith is a must-read for anyone interested in the origins of Christianity.
