Sex, Death and The Meaning of Life - Episode 1 - Richard Dawkins

This thought-provoking series is not about whether God exists or not. It explores more challenging questions such as "what happens as we move on and leave religion behind?", "what will guide and inspire us in a world free of all Gods?", "how can an atheist find a meaning in life?", "how can we face death without the comfort after life?" and "how we should think about right and wrong?"

The first episode is about "sin". Even today, most of us still carry around the religious notion of sin to tell right from wrong. Richard Dawkins explores the power, the religious idea of sin has our lives, explains why it's unhealthful and show how can you use reason and science to find a better way to be good.

Guys I gotta tell you my pain...

No offense ... I am a big fan of Prof. Richard Dawkins but last night after watching this , I am really disappointed in him...

First of all, the title for the show is very cheap, the writing is very low and after that, he start the show for the meaning and morality in life without God ; this is awesome! I couldn't dream of anything better than this... But I don't understand how on Earth he end up licking some Jews ass and defending the Judaism while we know him as an Atheist Scientist!

I am telling you that in these series, he is not himself as we knew it ... when he describes the morality in the animal kingdom, you don't feel that a brilliant scientist as Dawkins is talking to you! You see him as a humble, illiterate guy talking to a zoo kipper while you expect him to talk to you and tells you his scientific approach!

At the end of show , You don't know why he is defending ridicule, lies and any rubbish in human history.

Even though we all know that Judaism is the base and root of all the ridicule and evil religions in the human history, he never criticizes them and only is brave enough to blame Christianity or Islam or Buddhism!

In any atheist stuff in our midst, you never see any atheist criticize Moses or his history and so on .
Really we need to think about it.

He uses London's people protest against racism in August 2011, as a model of immoral act of humans!
It is really a shame when someone like him bows to authorities and
resigns from all the good things that we stood for!

Thanks for your notice guys and forgive me for my long comment.

I understand your pain and share the same feeling with you. I have not watched the video yet but I would be sad if he has done what you have described. I adore Richard Dawkins and respect him enormously, and at the same time, I have always seen his arguments not strong enough mainly because he's never demonstrate a philosophically strong position. That is not to ignore his efforts and great work he has been doing. Nevertheless, I have found his a great lack of a fundamental philosophical argumentation against religious claims and superscriptions.

One cannot expect everyone to have a strong philosophical understanding or ability when s/he is dealing with a social issue. Not everyone is a philosopher. That's acceptable and understandable. What is not as much acceptable, at least for symbols of freethinking like him, is not to grow beyond a fixed set of tools to fix away life's problems.

When The God Delusion came out, I read it more than four times. To my surprise, there were very little substance in the book I could use as 'reasons' against human stupidities (as if it actually needs a reason to be avoided. We live in a world where it is not obvious in many mammals' minds that illusions are, well, illusionary). It was a philosophically insignificant attempt if you ask me.

His other book, The Great Show on Earth, tried to fill in exactly that gap. It was a systematic attempt to get the reader from one point of view and educate her/him to another point of view. It was a way better book, although not as successful as The God Delusion.

Now, we have this video. I cannot talk about it because I have not watched it yet, but I can guess where it could have gone wrong.

I would say, we would benefit from his work in many ways and those parts of his work that are less than perfect will eventually be forgotten anyway (if they don't get used by his enemies to bash him anyway). Not everyone is perfect. We all have flaws and we all reach the end of our abilities sooner or later. Newton did, Einstein did, Aristotle did, everyone does. There will be a time when we start saying things or speculate about issues that we should not have; perhaps we should have left it untouched. But, most great thinkers, if they keep producing works, they will hit the "level of incompetence" (Peter Principle). I am not suggesting that this is the case for Richard Dawkins. But such a thing is not impossible either.

I guess, we have the choice to ignore the works that are ill-constructed and don't have logical consistency and factual basis. At least, some of us have.

Richard Dawkins does, in fact, roundly criticize the Mosaic myths and their imbedded cruelty in The God Delusion.

I don't think he is licking anyone's ass; rather, he is being kind, as he is to anyone he finds approachable or not utterly stupefying.

...and yes, this is a different anonymous... something which I'm not sure has always been the case here...

Richard Dawkins = 71 years
Judeo-Christianity = over 2 millenia

maybe a little slack here is warranted.

Archives of Liberty (sic).... a world of difference between rational and secular thinking and post GFC faith-based 'libertarian' thinking...pseudo-philosophy, failed political predictions and zombie economic ideas.
Confused zealous Randian ideologues worshipping the 'invisible hand, warring with Science, Darwin and behavourial economics. No similarity with this blog!

@wirraroo I know this is flamebait but couldn't resist...

Isn't satanism/black magick the best religion for libertarianism?

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law"

perfect!

If you so defiantly believe that there is no god and as an atheist you then find your meaning to life through knowledge and nature, art, ect. Then why waste time belittling the people who find meaning through god? I understand the curiosity as why they do so, but that does not mean you have to make them feel their choice of meaning is any less than yours. I don't believe in god but do not like calling myself an atheist, when you say atheist I feel people think not just a non belief but also an arrogance towards believers. I do not believe in religion but I do not dislike it or think the people that follow it are stupid, it is just simply irrelevant to me. I loved the way Richard Dawkins treated all the religious people he met, he gave them respect. Random thoughts hehe enjoyed the program

Great efforts by Richard Dawkins. Without being hard working this could not be possible to continue his research while promoting science and getting rid of superstition.

Thanks to atheist movies for adding this.
